Shame about the graffiti. https://wildireland.co.uk/blog/2012/12/great-photo-shame-about-the-graffiti We were out a couple of weeks ago looking for a photo opportunity - I felt that the lighthouse at the end of the Portstewart Strand beach could be the subject for a great picture. We had about 5 minutes of decent weather and my brother snapped this shot. It's now framed and hanging on his wall and it looks great!

Normally, there is a bit of work to do in the "digital darkroom" but in this case we had a bit of extra work. As you can see from the close-up below some vandals had gone to effort to walk to the end of the beach and climbed up on the lighthouse to scrape their political viewpoint.

Snorkelling at Portstewart https://wildireland.co.uk/blog/2012/8/snorkelling-at-portstewart We have enjoyed the better weather lately and between work and Olympics getting out to snorkel and take a few pictures.

Was out trying a Nikon FM2 that got on Ebay and took some pictures near our snorkelling venue.

ND fun at the Giants Causeway https://wildireland.co.uk/blog/2012/2/nd-fun-at-the-giants-causeway Last weekend we set off early in the to try out our neutral density filters at the Giants Causeway. We like landscape and are quite keen on motion blur effects with water. The weather was great for photos but was challenging. It was very windy, the wind blew up lots of spray from the sea, and this also meant that the waves were quite high. It rained unpredictably and it was really cold. The rocks were slippy and it was hard to keep the tripods still. The challenging light, sunny then not, made it tricky to get exposures right. Plus, we were shooting long exposures of between 10 and 30 seconds and I was manually focusing because my 10x ND filter was so dark! As we were finishing up a couple of foreign tourists turned up and started shouting at each other over the roar of the wind - I guess they were discussing composition. As we left for home hundreds more causeway visiters were being bused in. Good thing we got up so early.

My new Canon G1 X https://wildireland.co.uk/blog/2012/2/my-new-canon-g1-x I have a Nikon D7000, which I love, so I sold my Nikon D90 and a couple of lenses to buy a Canon G1 X, which is a camera series that I adore!

First impressions are very favourable. It looks great, handles well, and has all the features that you would expect from this model of camera. Pictures seem to be of a pretty good quality. It's expensive but it does have a lot of features, e.g. ND filter, raw pics, manual modes. It feels to have a solid build, handling is great, and controls are generally very well laid out. As some of the reviews have pointed out the focusing seems a bit slow on moving subjects but this isn't a major issue for me. The picture below is one of the first taken with the camera.
